For any Severn Core Trainee with an interest in orthopaedics (Priority will be given to Core T&O trainees). Of note: this is one of five Core T&O Clinical Skills Training Days that Core T&O trainees are expected to complete over their two years of core training. Overview

Delivered by Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons from the Bristol Children’s Hospital and from outside the Deanery, the day will consist of lectures focussing on essential knowledge in paediatric orthopaedic trauma including paediatric bone physiology and common paediatric fractures. A variety of small group practical stations will occur in the afternoon where candidates can attempt elastic nails and supracondylar fracture fixation.

Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided through the day. Please let us know in advance if you have any specific dietary requirements.

0815-0835 Tutorial: Children's bone, remodelling and growth

0835-0905 Tutorial: Common Paediatric fractures

0910-0940 Group: Paediatric radiology

0940-1010 Tutorial: Femoral fractures

1010-1030 Coffee

1030-1115 Tutorial: The limping child

1115-1145 Demo: SUFE Screw

1145-1215 Tutorial: Supracondylar fractures

1215-1230 Tutorial: Non Accidental Injury

1230-1330 Lunch

1330-1630 Group Work (Four 45 minute sessions):

  • Group A - Titanium elastic nails; Supracondylar fixation; Reduction + plaster; Thomas splinting
  • Group B - Thomas splinting; Titanium elastic nails; Supracondylar fixation; Reduction + plaster
  • Group C - Reduction + plaster; Thomas splinting; Titanium elastic nails; Supracondylar fixation
  • Group D - Supracondylar fixation; Reduction + plaster; Thomas splinting; Titanium elastic nails

1630-1645 Coffee

1645-1730 Group: Case discussions and ask the expert

1730-1740 Close, feedback


Cost

Severn Trainees: £30 deposit (refundable upon attendance)

Non-Severn Trainees: £60 deposit (refundable upon attendance)
