Otolaryngology

Welcome to the training website for Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, serving as a portal for ENT Trainees and Trainers in the Severn and Southwest region.

The website provides dates for important meetings and training days. In addition to this it will aid the trainee’s professional development by providing educational presentations, information on examinations and fellowships. The ARCP and RITA process will also be facilitated through this website.

ENT

The pan regional training programme for ENT is currently in a transitional stage whilst working towards splitting into two training programmes. In the meantime the following arrangements are in place:

  • Severn Deanery are responsible for Severn ENT Recruitment
  • Peninsula Deanery are responsible for peninsula ENT recruitment
  • Trainees are accountable to the Deanery and Programme Director supervising training in their employing hospital irrespective of of their training number affiliation. e.g. a A trainee with a Severn NTN number but working in Exeter is accountable to the Peninsula PD during that hospital attachment.
  • Individual Deaneries are responsible for the management of study leave expenses of all trainees in Peninsula or Severn hospitals regardless of NTN Deanery affiliation. e.g. a trainee with a Peninsula NTN but working in Gloucester would apply to the Severn Deanery for study leave expenses.
  • Peninsula Deanery are responsible for all other administration

Specialty Manager – Susan House responsible for recruitment and selection, quality monitoring, rotations, deanery representation on committees, and any changes to trainees personal data.

Otolaryngology Training

Otolaryngology is the third largest surgical specialty in the UK. Otolaryngology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the whole range of medical and surgical problems affecting the ear, nose and throat. There has been a trend towards specialisation within Otolaryngology. These areas of special interest do not have a separate specialty advisory committee (SAC) within the surgical collegiate structure

The areas of special interest in ORL at the time of writing are as follows:

  • Head and neck oncology
  • Benign head and neck surgery
  • Paediatric otorhinolaryngology
  • Otology
  • Neuro-otology
  • Skull base surgery
  • Medical rhinology
  • Surgical rhinology
  • Facial plastics
  • Phoniatrics
  • Cleft lip and palate

In addition trainees will be expected to pursue activities which support professionaldevelopment, for example:

  • Academic ORL
  • Management
  • Education

Further information on training is available from the ISCP and ENTUK website.
