Yeovil

Yeovil was founded in the eighth century after the Saxons conquered this part of Somerset and it grew to a small market town. Its main industry was glove-making and in the 1830s it was said that 3 million pairs were made there each year.

During World War I Yeovil began to manufacture planes and during World War II it became a target for German bombing because of its aircraft industry. Many of the town’s houses were damaged or destroyed. Today, the traditional industry of glove making has disappeared but it has been replaced by new industries like light engineering and aerospace. Today the population of Yeovil is 41,000 and is a rapidly growing, vibrant market town.

Half a mile from the centre of the town is the Yeovilton “Fleet Air Arm Museum” which houses the largest collection of naval aircraft in Europe, together with the first British-built Concorde. Within an easy distance is Montacute House, one of the finest Elizabethan country houses in the United Kingdom, Tintinhull gardens and Yeovil Country Park which is 127 acres and includes rivers, lakes, waterfalls, open grassland, woodland and a children's play area. Yeovil Alpine Village is the leading skiing and snowboarding venue in the South West and is located in the country park.

The Sutton Bingham Sailing Club is close by as it uses the local reservoir for racing. Along with its beautiful and varied coastline, Somerset is host to some amazing areas of countryside, including three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (the Quantock, Mendip and Blackdown Hills) and the Exmoor National Park.
